Firewall is presently of in XP Pro SP2--cannot change setting--ideas?
Regards, Tom

We don't have enough information about your computer to give you focused
troubleshooting. Please see this link for what details you need to
include in your next post:

http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

In the meantime, things to check:

1. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

2. The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

3. Do you have any third-party security software such as Norton or
McAfee Antivirus/Security suites? Programs like that have their own
firewalls and will disable the Windows Firewall (as they should).

4. Any error messages? If yes, what is the exact text?

Not sure what/when things changed(suspect it was after Sp2 install-have been using Zone Alarm-not now though-deleted it ! ) have run several virus checkers and sptware checks-they don't show anything-am presently "protected" thru Bellsouth package that supossedly has a firewall-but Micrsoft firewall wasn't working before that----no error messages-the buttons for turning on or off the firewall are greyed out-so I can't do anything with them-tried re-installing the netfw file as sugessted on the Micrsoft website-no change ! , Thanks, Tom

I don't know what the "Bellsouth package" consists of, but if it has a
firewall component it will have turned off the WF anyway. This is good
because you don't want two firewalls running.

Make sure your Bellsouth free security software has a firewall. If it
does, then that's why the WF isn't working - and that's just fine. It
probably wasn't working before because you had ZA and therefore the WF
was disabled by ZA.
