Firewall

I have just re installed windows and i am looking for a new firewall to
install . I have used Zone alarm in the past but was wondering if there is a
better one or are they all basically the same.Any advise would be
appreciated.

There are several to choose from, all of which have their pros and
cons.
Kerio is widely regarded as the tweaker's firewall ( V2.1.5 seems to
be popular ).

Outpost is another popular one, and has integrated web filtering built
in.

Sygate do a freeware version that sits nicely between the tweakability
of Kerio and the point and click simplicity of ZA.

Really you have to try them all out to see which one fits your level
of use.

If I recall correctly, Tiny Personal Firewall became Kerio. A
nice product for tweakers. Luckily, it's really good and if a
person isn't a geek, they can download ready-made files for it
(see alt.privacy.spyware for all ye need to know).

According to www.tinysoftware.com it's still Tiny PF.......? (newer versions
are commercial, and not freeware..... though users can upgrade to latest
versions for free...(last time I checked anyway))

TPF is commercial and has same roots as Kerio. Kerio is still being
developed but free for home use. v2.1.4 and 2.1.5 are the best Kerio
versions however. TPF works great but too many settings for ordinary
user..

Newer versions of TPF are commercial yes, but I've got v2.0 hosted on my
server, which was the last freeware version.

As for too many settings, it's one of the simplest firewall's I've come
accross........ (even novices I've reccomended it to, found it extremely
easy to use).

Kerio is a lot easier to use than TPF. Kerio is easier for new users

I use Kerio 2.15 and swear by it. Very effective (well, at least as
far as I know 80)> ) and not that hard to tinker with, given the
excellent documentation.

Thanks, I did that when I first installed it and it passed with flying
colors. However, we never really know what kinds of things governement
agencies can do.

Yes agreed 2.1.5 is the last really top version of Kerio. The 3.x 4.x are
too slow and resource hungry. I am using TPFv5.5 server edition atm due
to fact Kerio doesnt work with Windows 2003 server
