What is a good firewall for AMD 64 Athlon systems?? I have found several to
not be compatible and reboot the machine on install.

Zone Alarm

Black Ice

Dunno why you had the problem. I doubt it's an A64 problem, though...

I don't think ZA has their driver engine in 64-bit form yet. If you
get it to install and work, I'll bet you're running in 32-bit mode.

Rock

BTW, the last time I looked, BlackIce was really good at intrusion
detection, so I've been running both ZA and BI.

The latest versions of Norton Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm should
function fine in a 32-bit windows environment on an AMD64 system. As
I have no access to the 64-bit versions of windows, I can't say
whether they'll crash or not in that environment or if you'd need to
track down a 64-bit equivalent. If you're running a 32-bit version of
windows, then the issue is likely a problem with some component of the
windows installation or some other misbehaving piece of software.

If you're running an AMD64 version of Linux or even one of the x86-32
versions, you should be able to setup a working firewall using
IP-chains. The software is included with many distributions, and
there are a variety of frontends available if you want the process to
be more automated and easier.

If none of this works, you can always buy yourself a router. A cheap
one runs about $40-50, which is roughly what a windows commercial
firewall program costs. The router's firewall features would allow
you to open and close specific ports to limit traffic, but wouldn't
have the program-specific control that a software firewall would.
As it's a stand-alone hardware device that sits between your net
connection and the computer, it work regardless of what's happening on
the host machine.

I can't give any comments on Zone Alarm, because I haven't tried it, but
I can say this about Norton - it doesn't work with x64 OS. Norton Firewall
2005 won't even install, although the 2003 and 2004 versions will, but
cannot be programmed to Auto Enable. If your OS is Windows XP x64, there is
a built-in firewall, and you can download a free trial version (yes, again)
Microsoft AntiSpyware, which in effect is Giant AntiSpyware, that also
serves as an antivirus program.
