Hi

I have win2k professional. I wanted to know How can I
enable and disable a firewall? If i disable a firewall can
anyone else know that it has been enabled and disable?

About firewalls I only know that it protects your computer
from being hacked.

Are there 2 types of firewall? For LAN and internet
connections?

Can anyone explain me a little more on this?

thanks in advance

Windows 2000 does not come with a firewall like XP does. A firewall can be
configured to allow or block traffic from anywhere based on rules for ports,
protcols, ip addresses, and possibly application. It does not care if it is
the lan or the internet. A firewall can help prevent hacks by blocking
unwanted traffic to and from your computer from untrusted networks, but it
is just one step in network security. If you have just one computer, then a
personnal/software firewall will suit your needs. There are free ones to
download. Zone Alarm is the easiest to set up. See links for more info. ---

thanks a lot for ur replies!

but before i install these ... how can i enable and
disable a firewall? like if i install it then i shud also
know how to disable them?

else i wont be able to share my machine with anyone?

thanks a lot

When you install a software firewall it will be enabled. You don't want to
disable it [although you easily can]. You will want to configure it to work
with the computers you will be sharing resources with. Generally these
firewalls have what is called a "trusted" zone where you can add the ip
addresses or subnet for the trusted computers and then tell it to allow all
traffic with trusted zone. Some may call it Microsoft Networking zone, etc.
If you are on a network of computers, it is better to install a hardware
firewall connected to your cable/dsl modem if that is what you are using.
The software firewalls have help files and documents that come with
them. --- Steve

thanks for explaining so nicely.

one more question...
do we have some specifc way to disable/enable a firewall
or every firewall has a different way of disabling and
enabling. How can we disable a firewall from a win 2k
machine?

I want to know this particularly before i install a
firewall. Because i have to make my machine accessible to
others for the website devlopment work i am doing (its a
home PC). SO if it happens that i install a firewall and
dont know how to disable it then i will be in trouble,.

thanks

Depends on the firewall, but hopefully it should be obvious within the
software. Usually you launch the firewall software and look for the option
to do so. Often there's an icon in the lower right corner near your PC
clock that you can right-click to disable, or right-click to lanch the
firewall software and then disable.

And www.kerio.com and www.sygate.com are two other free
options. If you
prefer, you can buy a firewall device like
www.netgear.com or
www.linksys.com, starting around $75 US.
