Hi.

Is there a personal firewall software that is known to work with Vista?
I know Vista has a built-in firewall, but I like to fine tune rules and I
want learning mode for outbound connections.

Thanks.

Follow these steps:
Start > Run > wf.msc

There you go :) You can now fine tune the firewall including inbound and
outbound filtering.

And what's your impression of the VistaFirewallControl at this point,
CZ? I get the feeling that, since you're still using it, you must like
it. Or . . . ?

Vista's firewall is reworked extensively from XP's. It does outbound now,
as well as inbound and there is much for flexibility in the settings.

Daze:

So far so good.
It reminds of a very simple version of ZA free.

Rock

The Vista f/w does not notify you of the initial outbound attempt by an app.
VistaFirewallControl does.

" It does outbound now"
Are you referring to the standard Firewall or the one available under
Administrative Tools?

Andre:

Generally, VistaFirewallControl notifies you of the initial outbound attempt
by an app without any setup configuration on your part.

In this regard, it is like ZA free, and Vista RTM f/w is not.
VistaFirewallControl defaults to prompting you for what action to take,
Vista RTM f/w does not.

Sigh.. repeat after me. VistaFirewallControl is not a firewall, it is just a
simple frontend for Vista's built in firewall.

But that's *good,* it seems to me. Vista's firewall could *use* a simple
frontend.

Peter:

If it is a front-end to Vista's f/w why doesn't it make rules in the Vista
f/w? Why does it work when Vista's f/w is disabled?

Sounds like it is not a front-end.

Sounds like it is a simple application gate which is the simplest type of
f/w.
