The xp desktop can see and access the vista laptop. However I can only
access the xp files from the vista laptop if the xp firewall is turned off.
How can I access the files with the xp firewall turned on.

Run the XP's file and Printer sharing wizard!

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

I have tried EVERYTHING you've described. I've run the network wizard
(several times) removed firewalls, given every permission possible,
downloaded a patch DTTP something or other, etc. No luck. When I run
network discovery on the Vista notebook or map the network, I can see the
desktop that is running XP. But when I click on it, the device is not
available - and there is no suggestion for help. When I run diagnose the
problem, I get a message that there is a problem, but not what the problem
is, nor how to fix it.

I can see the folders I've shared on my Vista notebook in the XP desktop and
can access them, but I can't go the other way, from the Vista running
notebook to the XP running desktop.

After 3 days I'm so fed up, I want to return the laptop and just forget it.
If you can help, I would be so grateful.

I ran the network wizard again and I did give the workgroup the same name. I
seems to be working now. Thanks
