Yesterday I posted a message to a topic called Firewall,
as I was one of the many noticing that if you install the
anti-spyware on WinXP SP2 it will cause the MS firewall
to stop working. I thought it was hilarious that MS
corrupted its own software. Today I found out they just
simply deleted the whole topic.

Well, today I found out that also my Network stopped
working. Now, this is less funny. Luckily I found another
topic that had a solution that would fix my Networking
issue. It turned out that it fixed both my issues. Let's
hope everything else is working fine. (Knock on wood) I
can't believe that MS publicizes a beta that has so many
problems with their own OS. Bon swat, here is the
solution:

Btw, think twice before installing this anti-spyware!!!
The intent is great but this version should not have been
released as a beta.

My Firewall as well as my network stopped working!!! But
the program at http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?
ttid=257 was able to restore them both!

Thanks to Brad for the link!

Seriously folks this is a result of finding deeply tied spyware. As I've
said the "fix" you guys are posting is nothing more than a few manual clicks
and/or maybe a line of typing. This is really not an issue and i can fully
understand why it's happening.

See this earlier response by me:

There is a perfectly good explanation for this. A lot of Spyware adds itself
as a part of the Winsock LSP. In some cases these may not be additions but
replacements. It is very easy for a Winsock to become corrupt especially
after a removal of a layer. The tool you mention is simply a winsock repair
tool and this is a very, very common problem that is 99% percent of the time
related, in some form, to spyware or the removal of it.

If you are using XP SP2 you can accomplish the same this tool does by going
to Start - Run and typing "netsh winsock reset" (minus quotes)

If you are using pre-SP2 or 2k then the following article does the same
thing:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817571

Perhaps a good suggestion would be to add detection for corrupt winsock and
repair if necessary but honestly this is easier said than done.

Thank you!

I just spend 10 hours trying to solve it.

I couldn't connect either by LAN or modem, and my Norton
kept disabelling itself no matter how I reinstalled it.
Well now I got a brand new renewal date 1 year ahead, but
that was the best I could say about todays achevements, -
until this!

I had problems with my ZoneAlarm Pro that I purchased
over a year ago and which had a less than 2 months old
expired subscription and which had been updated just 1
day before the subscription expired. The problem was that
its Program List would enter an invalid entry when I
tried to add the gcasDtServ.exe to be allowed network
access (per the MS AntiSpyware Help info). I was doing
that because I couldn't update AntiSpyware or do anything
with it via network after the install on XP SP2 fully
udated OS. And ZAP wasn't even asking if it was ok, but
instead its True Vector service would crash when I tried
to enter gcasDtServ.exe as an allowed program. It
complained about an invalid creation date on the file,
but manual examination of its properties found nothing
wrong.

Perhaps no great loss. I was very annoyed at ZAP's
harrassing popups about the expired subscription, and
even more annoyed that their tech support suggested that
I uninstall ZAP to stop the popups (!) but they've gotten
their way with that install as I've uninstalled it now
AND trashed one still in unopened box that *was* for
another computer -- I'll just stick with Windows Firewall
and/or external protection. Anyway, I'd lost Privacy
entry new additions ability in ZAP before all this and
figured it was punishment for no subscription and was
near ready to dump ZAP regardless. But MS AntiSpyware did
force the issue and uninstall was required because of it.
I like the ZoneAlarm Free, but I'll nevery buy it again.
I don't yet know how well ZoneAlarm Free will work with
MS AntiSpyware. But ZAP with expired subscription didn't
work with it for me very well at all.

MS AntiSpyware Beta is only midly buggy (for example,
removal of one Spybot protection as someone else pointed
out) but over all I like it a lot. I hope it remains free.
