Maybe it's a coincidence, but the day after one of Microsoft's
humongous updates downloaded and installed itself, Windows Firewall
alerted me that it was turned off. So . . . I turned it back on. Next
restart, same thing. I've installed no new software. XP auto update
is turned on. Norton Internet Security auto update is turned on.
Norton Personal Firewall is turned off.
I bought two new computers with XP Pro installed. First four months,
everything worked just like it was supposed to. About a month before
the Firewall behavior began, which, incidentally, began on both
computers the day after after an XP update, one of the computer's hard
drives began continuing to run when I put it in standby. The other one
behaves as it should. I've had to change the first one to hibernate
when I push the power button if I want the hard drive to shut off. A
minor issue, I guess. I'm much more concerned about the firewall
turning itself off all the time.
NAV reports no viruses. Ad-Aware and SpyBot have cleaned all the crap
off they know about. Nothing else is going on to suggest a problem.
Any ideas?
