firewall enabled? disabled?

windows xp sp2. when i boot my pc the firewall is off, i turn it on without
exceptions but when i re-boot it is off again. i also receive a message from
norton asking if i want it on or off. i have always assumed ithe firewall
should be on. any advice?

Is this Norton Interenet Security (NIS) that you're using? If so it has a
firewall in it. It is likely turning off the Windows Firewall to prevent
conflicts. One or the other, not both, is the general rule. And if this is
NIS you now see the reason I recommend avoiding full blown suite
applications.

If you have Norton Firewall enabled then the Windows Firewall will be
disabled by default. You don't need two firewalls.
