They all have similarities... they're all crap IMO =)

Sygate I had waaaaay too much hassle removing / upgrading.. even with a
tool that sygate support sent me.

Zone alarm is just a PoS period! ANy non rules-based firewall isn't
worth touching.

Never used XP shite.. but if it's anything like the 2k one, forget it..
actually, it's M$.. forget it anyway!

2 recommendations in order:

1:> Agnitum Outpost
2:> Kerio

Tiny is Kerios "brother" but it kept crashing on my box for some
reason.. have run outpost on my win box fr sometime and not had any
hassles at all =)

Ian

The ICF firewall built into Windows XP only blocks inbound traffic. Sygate
and Zone Alarm can block traffic in both directions. Both Sygate and ZA will
take a day or two to "learn" which applications you wish to allow and which
you do not. Read the Help file and you'll be fine with either choice.

XP firewall is incoming protection only and is very hard to configure.

Ahh, sounds like the PoS that comes with 2K then. Every change you make,
you need to reboot too!!! Gawd halp you if you're a "n00b" to these
sorts of things and don't know what ports you need to allow traffic in
on the first time around (or add services later that require Inet
relationships).

Forget firewall software. Use a dedicated firewall such as a NAT router.
Firewall software is notoriously unreliable because it can be attacked and
disabled. Most inexperienced users don't know if they should allow access on a
certain port or not, so they say yes. Thus the firewall is defeated.
