firewall crash

I downloaded a sygate5 firewall and after installing and
re-booting the computer my internet connecion failed. I
uninstalled sygate firewall and the internet
worked...what happened

can anyone recommend a firewall that is 'free and is
worthwhile. I will buy 1 if I need to.
