Firefox/Thunderbird popup windows

I installed Firefox and Thunderbird on my father's PC and it is acting
quirky. If I select <tools><extensions> or <themes> in either, the
extensions window will display briefly, then disappear as if it was
blocked by a pop up blocked. In Thunderbird, if we double-click on a
message header to display the body of the message, the message window
appears, then goes away. In both program, selecting <tools><options>
brings up the options window normally. He does not have "block pop ups"
checked in his options. Any idea what could be causing this behavior?

This mine is only a shot in the dark ;-)
Does your father have a firewall or other software blocking popups?

You got it. He didn't think he had any popup blocking software, but I
had him check what was being started and guess what he found? :-)
