What's the difference between the Mozilla Suite and Netscape? Unless I'm
doing something wrong, the tabbed interface requires more than just
entering another address in the box...more complicated that the tabbing in
CrazyBrowser, Avant Browser, NetCaptor, Opera, SlimBrowser, MyIE...the
browsers that got me into the advantages of a tabbed interface.

Hello,
What's the difference between the Mozilla Suite and Netscape?
Unless I'm doing something wrong, the tabbed interface requires
more than just entering another address in the box... more
complicated that the tabbing in CrazyBrowser, Avant Browser,
NetCaptor, Opera, SlimBrowser, MyIE...the browsers that got me
into the advantages of a tabbed interface.

these times Netscape is just a distribution of the Mozilla Suite.
There are some tweaks and some other applications distributed along
with the browser/emailer (for example Winamp or ICQ), but usually
the Mozilla Suite is intended to be basis of other distributions,
not a end user download itself (even when I like it more itself than
the Netscape one). The official distribution by mozilla.org should
be Firefox/Thunderbird and alikes, the stand alsone applications
based on the mozilla code.

Tabs were invented by Opera, AFAIK. The individual behaviour of
the apps differ, but maybe you can live with change of settings.
For example Mozilla Suite allows you to set up in preferences, that
with Ctrl+Enter (instead of just Enter) in address box opens this
in a new tab. I think this is much better than always open another
tab.

Regards,
Thorsten

You probably want all links to open in tabs?

In firefox 1.0 you can do that, *without* any extensions

http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/releases/1.0.html

Sadly they chose to hide the feature...

They hid it too well for me (but I'm a muppet)

I couldn't find the area/file your link referred to, could you help please?

It's the one thing I really really want most....

You'll find those hidden options under Tools - Options...- Advanced ->
Tabbed browsing, provided that you first enable the view of some of them
this way:
* in FF address bar type about:config, then Enter
* in the Filter field paste this text:
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs
* the page now will show only that row: double click on it to change its
value from false to true.

Now in the Advanced options under the Tools menu you'll have more options to
play with.

Actually you can even have more control than that

If you select "Force links that open new windows to open in: a new tab",
Firefox diverts links with target="_blank". It also diverts JavaScript
window.open() calls, but only calls that don't specify window features
(e.g. size and which toolbars are displayed). Most calls to window.open()
specify the size of the window. You can change this by setting the
browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction pref in about:config.

* 0: divert window.open()
* 1: don't divert window.open()
* 2: divert window.open() without feature

Thanks very much, Aaron (I only have quoted text, I don't know what's
happened to your original, but my news server is getting very flaky.

Unfortunately I've just tried it, and although the option has appeared in
the options, it doesn't seem to work - so tabbed browseing is still a
mystery; I always forget to ctrl/click till it's too late

Late news - Ive just found the right click option to open in new tab,
Woo-hoo!
