Every single time I start FireFox 1.0 on WinXP SP2
I get this message from my Sygate Personal Firewall program:

Sygate Personal Firewall 12/25/2004 23:59.18
Firefox (firefox.exe) is trying to connect to fxfeeds.mozilla.org
[207.126.111.203] using remote port 89 (HTTP - World Wide Web).
Do you want to allow this program to access the network?

How do we tell Firefox to STOP trying to connect every
day to fxfeeds.mozilla.org?

I don't see any settings to turn this off.
I update my browser software when I want (not every day!).

The closest option I can find in the FireFox menu selection
Tools->Options->Advanced- is Software Update
(which I turned off ages ago to no avail).

Does EVERY firefox browser in the world connect to
fxfeeds.mozilla.org EVERY time the browser is brought up?

a) Isn't that wasteful of Internet bandwidth?
b) What function does this automatic check serve?
c) How can we turn this wastefull useless check off?

Thank you, in advance,
Fred Wilson

I think most people just block Mozilla/Netscape with firewall software.

I read somewhere the purpose of this constant check was so that the Mozilla
folks could claim to have twenty million users a day over that other browser.

If that's true, it's a marketing gimmick which probably cost tremendous
Internet bandwidth losses but I don't think the Mozilla folks care about that
as I've never heard of this as being a really big problem for the Internet.

previsoulsy i had noticed when i ran pc magazine's inctrl5.exe
executable that this fxeeds security check occurs each time the
firefox browser starts up. A friend said it drops a file in your
system directdory called idcheck.log and then changes the date of that
file and then uploads that information from your hard disk to the
fxfeeds ftp upload site.

I guess the netscpae people are checking up on the ip addresses of
everyone using the browser for marketing purposes. I hpoe no important
identity information is uploaded each time it checks.

Do you have the standard 'Headlines' Live Bookmark item? 'fxfeeds'
sounds like 'Firefox Feeds' for me.

That sounds like the problem.
Thank you for your astute observation.
While I applaud the Mozilla team for adding new features ...
I have no desire whatsoever to read news from a bookmark.

Is the best way to remove this unwanted mozilla feature simply
to delete the bookmark using the "manage bookmarks" menu?

Or do you recommend I take the advice to just block all outgoing
traffic to anything that starts with "fxfeeds" using firewall software?

Which is the best (workable) approach?

Probably the easiest approach is to right click on the live book mark and
choose "delete". -- FACE

Stop spreading RUMOR!!! fxfeed is the 'Latest Headlines'. Remove those
links if you don't want them.

In the advanced settings there is a check box to periodically check for
updates to Firefox and My themes and extensions. Try unchecking these
and see if that helps.
