I used to use a download manager called "Fresh Download" which would integrate with the browser (in this instance Firefox.) Recently, I uninstalled Fresh Download, and a moment ago, I tried to install the download manager recommended by Ian in another post, however I found that I couldn't :( Each time I clicked on the download button, up came a page which was blank, apart from the "Fresh Download" logo, and an error message which said "Fresh Download cannot take over this download, please press back-button to return to normal."

Numerous tries merely repeated the same message. I looked in Firefox "options" to see if I could somehow "de-integrate" the now non-existent download manager, but couldn't find anything there. I really would appreciate a bit of advice please, if anyone can help? My dark mutterings are beginning to worry the cats!! :D Thank you

Sounds like there is bits of it left over from the uninstall, Have you tried running Ccleaner?

If that dont fix it you may have to backup your firefox profile and renistall firefox, but that may not work either as the bits of the download manager might be in the profile folder....

Doh! That's it, it's official .. the brain-cell must be on strike! Thank you V_R :thumb: I feel like an idiot, I completely forgot to run CCleaner, because I too suspect that there might be a bit of the old programme remaining somewhere. Will give it a run now. Thanks again :D

No probs i've done it myself many times. ;)

Lets just hope it works, It may or may not. If it dont then we try something else.

What parts of firefox do you have CCleaner clean?

That's generous of you V_R :D Well, I've run CCleaner - several times, and Reg Mechanic, each of which has mopped-up remaining bits of the download manager, but..... it is still not allowing me to download anything, I'm getting the same message mentioned previously. :( CCleaner is set to clean everything in Firefox, by the way.

I really really HATE download managers ... ;)

Q: Even though it is uninstalled and I have attempted to delete any relating entries in the registry, I get a message, Fresh Download cannot take over this download. How could I solved it?

A: We have put "FD.exe /u" command line in the installer to unregister all DLL files that probably registered into your system.

If this failed and Fresh Download plug-in still in the Netscape/ Mozilla/Opera plug-in folder, then try to delete npfd.dll or fdplugin.dll file from that folder.

Or if there is problem with IE integration, type this on your run menu:
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\FreshDevices\FreshDownload\FDcatch.dll"

Restart your computer, and then delete all files in Fresh Download folder. Fresh Download only keeps its files in that folder.

Hope that helps.

I ran a search on the PC and several stray bits of Fresh Download appeared - I deleted them manually, think everything has gone, nothing came up when I clicked "run" and inserted " regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\FreshDevices\FreshDownload\FDcatch.dll" as you advised Mucks and "The specified module could not be found" came up. Still cannot download anything from Firefox though. That blooming message "Fresh Download cannot take over....etc" just keeps appearing. Annoying or what! Thank you both for responding

Is it worth checking there isn't still an entry in <MSCONFIG - SERVICES > that you could untick.

Sorry that didn't work TC, I was just quoting from their website.

Couple options here,
Re-install Fresh Download and then try un-installing using their FD.exe /u
Back-up your Favorites from Firefox, then un-install Firefox, then install Firefox 2

A nice program to use to see "running processes" is ProcessExplorer :thumb:

Good afternoon Covenant and Mucks - thank you for the further suggestions - MSCONFIG didn't reveal anything, by the way. Would you believe me if I said that I'd been considering re-installing Fresh Download again Mucks? I've been giving it a good ponder before logging on today, but wasn't sure if it was just a daft idea on my part, however, I think it is what I shall try next.

Another "senior moment" here ... I forgot that I had ProcessExplorer on here, but knew that the name rang a bell  anyway, after a bit of searching I have found it again (trying to be tidy, I'd popped the shortcut into a desktop folder... but then forgotten about it.) Will run that in a minute. :thumb:

Now I don't suppose you have any idea where I might have put a Clipart CD that's gone missing here....?

it's over there ...

I will turn up ... but you have to be looking for something entirely different, then, when you find that CD, you will forget what it was you were looking for in the first place. :)

Welcome to MY World! :D

Hey! good form of exercise ... I don't get too much these days. :D

Whoopee! Problem sorted. I have re-installed FreshDownload and have decided to keep it, because to be honest, I understand it better than the one Ian recommended (FD is a bit more "idiot proof" ;) ) But I have at least learned something - which is to "de-integrate" the programme from the browsers before attempting to uninstall it. Think it would have been okay had I done that. Thank you all for your time and help, it is much appreciated :thumb: :D
