Firefox connection problem?

Hello there, My first time with firefox, and I'm still new with most
internet connection/computer problems.
I have installed Firefox 1.0 onto my Win XP as per proper directions.
Everything went perfect, I had agreed the 'Mozilla start page' should
be as shown i.e. with google search bar as the opening.
Everything looked good, and I was able to begin with simple stuff.
I then realised that I had been connected to the internet all the time
via IE/my server (wannadoo) so I tried to connect using the firefox
icon after turning off my internet.
What happens is it starts up and then states www.Google.com could not
be found, ( no mention of firefox site?)
I did uninstall firefox, then reinstalled - with internet off!
I cannot connect to firefox unless I go through IE(6) onto my servers
home page (Wannadoo), then I can connect to firefox no problem.
I can even go straight to Google.com from wannadoo?
So, what am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do please?
Thanks for any advice/help
Allen.

Hi,

Your description of the problem is rather confusing. Answering my
questions (inline) might help someone help you.

What do you mean by the above? Are you referring to the search field at
the top-right corner?

Here, I presume that you mean that you were connected to the Internet
through your ISP (Wanadoo) all this time.
so I tried to connect using the firefox
icon after turning off my internet.
What happens is it starts up and then states www.Google.com could not
be found, ( no mention of firefox site?)
I did uninstall firefox, then reinstalled - with internet off!

What do you mean here? Connect to Firefox through IE?!
I can even go straight to Google.com from wannadoo?

?

Nothing. Windows is written so basically only IE/Outlook Express can
automatically dial a connection. Firefox couldn't find Google.com
because you weren't connected to the internet.

Found out what was wrong
I needed Microsoft Net Framework

Thanks Conor for this...
I actually thought it was because I had to be connected???
So, I have to start up with IE, than go to firefox if I want to do
anything in terms of downloading etc?...hmm,
thanks again

Hello my friend, I see how I must have confused you, sorry.
If you see my reply to conor, maybe It will be better to just forget.
Basically, I innocently thought I could go to Firefox without being
online. It seems that I have to connect through IE then transfer to
firefox before I can use firefox....ah well, sometimes life sucks!
Thanks for your kind reply though,
Allen.

You shouldn't have to use IE to connect to the Internet.

I'm on Wanadoo, too, and on my desktop there's an icon entitled "Alcatel
Speedtouch Connection" which I can double-click to connect to the Internet.
You, too, should, by default, have such an icon on your desktop (although
yours may be entitled "Wanadoo BroadBand" or similar).

Or you go to start / programs / accessories / communications / network
connections (or similar) where you should find your dial up connectoid.
right click on it and put a shortcut on the desktop. Dial up from there
and launch Firefox, or whatever, and carry on as normal.

No. Create a shortcut to the dial up connection, click that, connect
and then use Firefox.

<snip more problems>

It sounds as though you need to create your own DUN (dial up networking)
connectoid.

I don't know about XP, but in 98 (the principles the same)

doubleclick my computer

doubleclick dial up networking

doubleclick make a new coonection

then go through the next panels - leave most things pretty well alone,
but give the connexion a name (it will appear on the desktop) enter the
phone number you dial (watch area codes etc, quite often these mean
other countries, so a uk code will likely be one long number), enter
your username and password; you should know these last things, or get
them from your isp.

This should put an icon on your desktop which you can doubleclick and
dial up straight away, launch your browser,( and your new newsreader now
you're not stuck with OE)

If XP is much different, but if I'm on the right track, someone else
will help, I'm sure

Create a icon to Firefox on your Desktop and when you use it, it will
use your default DUN
E-mail address, hopefully self-explanatory

This isn't very good advice, Mike. You've got him jumping through
unnecessary hoops.

He already has the DUN connection configured or IE and Outlook
wouldn't work.

He simply needs to find that connection under Dial Up Networking with
Windows Explorer, drag it to the desktop (it will prompt him to
confirm the creation of a shortcut) and use that icon to connect to
the internet.

Then he can use whatever client software he wishes, including Firefox.
