Firefox .9 Extensions

Colonel Blip

I currently use Avant Browser and love the features. Perhaps like others, I
would like to have a browser other than one based on IE. Firefox seems ok
out of the box, but I miss a lot of the AB features.

Has anyone here made the switch or compared features and have input on the
best extensions to add to FF to increase the functionality to be similar to
AB?

Also, I depend upon Roboform; any experience with Roboform and FF?

Thanks.

Why don't you tell us your favorite features of AB, and _then_ we'll
try to suggest Firefox equivalents?

That would be easier for us... I don't think anybody will have the
time and the enthousiasm to put together a global feature-comparison
for you.

Excellent idea, in view of the exploits going around that even CERT
recommends using another browser it seems.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3840101.stm

Haven't used AB much compared to Myie2, but typically something like Tab
browsing extension(or a host of smaller extensions) should hit most of
the tab browsing functionality + session saving

You probably want adblock for blocking ads.

For mouse gestures- I use "All in one gestures" myself, there are others.

If you are one of those users who wants lots of buttons on the toolbar to
turn on or off cookies, js, java, proxies, images etc, you probably need
stuff like prefbutton, toolbar enhancements , cookie button , cookie
culler etc.

Maybe something like Paranoid X for clearing all privacy entries with one
click. There still isn't anything that will do it automatically on exit,
though one may be added to x soon. Or you could use this
http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/

That should cover most of it.And with firefox there are lots of other
stuff you can do via extensions not available in other browsers....

Indeed. Though I have being toying with doing one for MyIe2, espically
now that super drag and drop (practically all of it) is available in a
firefox extension.

Why don't you tell us your favorite features of AB, and _then_ we'll
Fair enough. Here are the top dozen, not in any priority order.

1.. Multi-Window Browsing, i.e. tabbed
2.. Full IE Compatibility, i.e. Cookies, ActiveX Controls, Java Script,
and Macromedia Flash.
3.. Records Cleaner: With Avant Browser, you can easily keep your privacy
by deleting Typed Addresses, Auto-Complete Passwords, Cookies, History of
Visited Web Sites, Temporary Internet Files and Search Keywords. Also, I can
clear (user selected ones) automatically when Avant Browser shuts down.
4.. Safe Recovery: If Avant Browser is closed improperly, all open web
pages are saved and will be automatically reopened at next startup.
5.. Automatic refresh - I'm able to set timed refresh of all of the tabbed
sites from 10 seconds up to 15 minutes.
6.. Able to create groups of sites. These are simply more convenient to
access than using favorites and organizing into folders.
7.. Able to set a group of sites that will open when I first open Avant
Browser
8.. Can set a proxy and turn it on/off from the toolbar.
9.. Flash Animation Filter
10.. Built-in Pop-up Stopper
11.. Compatible with Roboform
12.. Links toolbar

Thanks.

Someone else is going to have to give you specifics but I alternate
between Avant and Mozilla and most of what you mention is covered by
extensions. Multizilla which I think works on firefox helps with tab
management.
Safe recovery- if you go to the options menu, I think you can set this.
It came default on mozilla and I reset it to stop saving tabs. I'm
still more familiar with avant so I can't give you exact information but
if you review the settings under options and if you visit the extension
room you will find almost everything on your list.

1.. Multi-Window Browsing, i.e. tabbed

I love MyIE2 but I'd like to try something else, but I need "alias" (I
write "pippo" and it converts to a full link (e.g.
http:\\www.pippo.com\minnie\mouselino.org) and "quick search" (if I
write "gn pippo" e.g. it converts to a Google newsgroup search with
"pippo" as keyword).

1.. Multi-Window Browsing, i.e. tabbed

Check. You could install extensions to enhance and extend
functionality, like TBE or TabBrowser Preferences... check the
extensions list for more.
2.. Full IE Compatibility, i.e. Cookies, ActiveX Controls,
Java Script, and Macromedia Flash.

All OK, but no ActiveX. That's part of the reason why FF is safer
:)
Actually, there is a plugin for the Mozilla browser (<> Firefox)
that enables ActiveX functionality, but the Mozilla people
themselves recommend against it:

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#ActiveX

It's also the reason why you should keep IE as backup browser on
Windows systems, for when you _really_ _*REALLY*_ need to use
ActiveX.
3.. Records Cleaner: With Avant Browser, you can easily keep
your privacy by deleting Typed Addresses, Auto-Complete
Passwords, Cookies, History of Visited Web Sites, Temporary
Internet Files and Search Keywords. Also, I can clear (user
selected ones) automatically when Avant Browser shuts down.

No problem for the first part. The automatic clearing is not
default functionality, for now there seems to be no extension that
does exactly that. There are extensions that provide convenient
toolbar buttons to clear such information, though.
4.. Safe Recovery: If Avant Browser is closed improperly, all
open web pages are saved and will be automatically reopened at
next startup.

Hmmm... this one I don't know. It didn't crash on me yet, but
that's not really an argument I guess.
5.. Automatic refresh - I'm able to set timed refresh of all
of the tabbed sites from 10 seconds up to 15 minutes.

TabBrowser extensions has an autoreloading feature.
6.. Able to create groups of sites. These are simply more
convenient to access than using favorites and organizing
into folders.

The TBE extension lets you create "tab groups", I think it
provides the same functionality that you describe.
7.. Able to set a group of sites that will open when I first
open Avant Browser.

Again, TBE should be able to do that. For everything about TBE,
check out:

http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en
8.. Can set a proxy and turn it on/off from the toolbar.

The "SwitchProxy Tool" extension does just that, it was released a
few days ago:

http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?
application=firefox&id=125&vid=187
9.. Flash Animation Filter

FlashBlock extension:
http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

NOTE: I don't know if it's Firefox 0.9-compatible yet. If it's
not, it's just a matter of time.
10.. Built-in Pop-up Stopper

Check. The "Popup Count" plugin even counts the number of blocked
popups:

http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/

;-)
11.. Compatible with Roboform

Don't know RoboForm, but you might be interested in this:

http://graemef.com/?q=node/view/312
12.. Links toolbar
Present.

Thanks.

No problem. Hope you make the switch :)

Well, it seems that the author of the X extension has the
intention to write such an auto-clear-on-shutdown extension, but
currently it's not yet available.
TabBrowser extensions has an autoreloading feature.

And there's also a ReloadEvery extension that does this.

Which extension? This is what I miss most from MyIE2.

I also found this when I went over to get the Popup extension you directed
me toward. Thanks.

Wald,

Thanks for all of the excellent help. Since writing I had found some of the
tab extensions on the mozilla site, but was unaware of TBE. Looks like it
will solve a lot of the 'problems' for me.

The Roboform issue will be fixed I suspect. In the meantime, I will use FF
for my routine browsing, but when I have to do serious stuff with passwords
and the like I will be using AB, since RoboForm works so well. I will
continue to migrate as they get the Robo stuff updated.

Funny, works fine for me.

In any case for those sites that force (free) registration, I also use a
extension (bugme not http://extensions.roachfiend.com/). It works
together with the site bugmenot http://www.bugmenot.com/, to obtain
stored passwords to bypass registrations without going to all the
borther of registering :)

All this is available in Firefox without extensions.

The new Firefox 0.9 and mozilla 1.7 actually makes making such shortcuts
even easier.

I'm glad it's working fine for you, but you should be aware using the
old FlashBlock may cause problems with future upgrades. See
<http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/flash.html#new-adblock> for what info
there is about how to mitigate the possibility of problems.

I like 'flash click to play' because it gives me an option to play it if I
like.
