Assuming you have AOL, you'll need a third-party firewall.
America Online installs its own connection settings that override
the ones that come with Windows XP. America Online's
connection settings don't include a way to turn on Windows XP's
built-in firewall.

Visit the following web site for instructions on downloading
a FREE firewall program for your computer.

Does windows xp home edition come with a fire wall
security system.

Yes.
Go to the properties of your connection and you can turn it on on the
Advanced tab.

Hi Nicholas

"Assuming you have..." - what a crock... From the OP you didn't know... admit it...

Go>start\control panel\double click network connections
then right click on your connection and then click
properties and then the advanced tab and put a check mark
in the box. good luck

Greetings --

That won't help the OP.

AOL (an on-line content provider that ignores international
Internetworking standards in favor of its own proprietary products),
has deliberately made its connection software incompatible with both
WinXP's built-in firewall and WinXP's Internet Connection Sharing
feature. AOL's proprietary connection applet is deliberately designed
to preclude your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to include
enabling/disabling WinXP's ICF and ICS.
