Has anyone compared the new Abbyy FineReader 8 OCR program with
version 7? The upgrade from 6 to 7 was not much of an improvement in
my experience. These upgrades are expensive, $180 in this case. I've
read a couple of reviews, but they mainly just repeat the press
releases put out by Abbyy and don't do any real testing.

They made a bunch of UI changes I don't like. They removed <ctl><shift>k -
you have to mess with an option switch. This is a major PITA since I always
want to single scan the first few pages to get size and margin settings then
start the multipage scan.

They added a command to straighten text lines on the gutter curl - it even
works sometimes, but not most of the time.

I think it added some export formats - pdb?

Basically if 7 works for you don't upgrade.

I think you can download a trial of 8 if you want to test it yourself.

Is Abby considered better than Omnipage?

TIA,
DTV

In the two latest reveiws I read (I think one was in PC Magazine) within the
last 6 months, Abbyy scored a bit higher than Omnipage. But they both scored
much higher than any other competitor.
