Finding out what updates U got

My MSA runs at 11 a.m., and yes, I downloaded the latest version. As usual it
ran this morning but I received no announcement of any new updates. Tonight I
clicked on ...check for new updates, and it said it found some, but have no
idea what it found. With the old version it told me what number I got, so how
do I find out what it installed tonight? Can't figure out why it didn't do it
automatically, as I have it set for that too. Very confused, any help
appreciated.

JJ - sometimes the definition update takes several tries to complete
properly. Help, about gives an indication, but it isn't perfect--it can be
wrong. To be certain, go to Help, about, and then click the Diagnostics
button. scroll down, and look for a line ending in two numbers separated by
a /, like this: 134/134.

If those two numbers are equal, the update has completed correctly, and the
definition number you see is correct. If they are different, retry--file,
check for updates--until they are equal.

Thanx a bunch for that info. Bill, was wondering what that Diagnostics thing
was all about. LOL I had 2 worms on here about 3 weeks ago, and Geeksto go
got rid of them for me, so I am mighty leary about messing with this thing
now that it is clean, so if I don't know what anything does, I avoid it.

Just checked it, and got the 134/134, so guess it took. Have a great day,
and thanx again!!!! BTW, could U please tell me if downloading and running
Ccleaner is a good idea to help keep the machine clean? So far I have a
firewall, MS w/SP2, Norton's, and now MSA. I'm trying so hard to keep from
getting anything, man those worms are brutal to get rid of.

Enjoy your day....:)

I'm neutral about CCleaner. Microsoft's position, in general, seems to be
that crud or bloat in the registry is not a significant issue--doesn't
impact performance, by design. So I worry about digging in there and maybe
cleaning up too much. I know for myself, that housecleaning involves some
risk--I always hit the wrong button somewhere along the line and get rid of
something I hadn't intended to.

Plun and others here swear by Ccleaner, it seems well supported and kept up
to date--so that's why the neutral--I think that if you don't go overboard
with it it is probably at least harmless, and perhaps it really is of some
help.

I'd love to see some actual stats that prove some performance change,
though.

Sounds good to me. Like U said, sometimes overkill is worse. I make sure I
clean out all cookies, both from IE and my computer, plus I do a disk cleanup
each nite, and a defrag each week. I also check my java for anything that was
downloaded and keep that clean. Guess I got a lil paranoid after getting the
last 2 worms. :)

On thing I think I am going to do when my Nortons runs out, is switch to
AVG. I have heard many folks swear by AVG, so why shell out unecessary $$$
for Nortons. Thing that ticks me off, is U get no support from them, and a
phone call is like 30.00..PUUULEASE! I don't surf the web that much, or visit
sites that should be infected, so I feel Norton should have caught those 2
worms, as I saw nothing in any emails that got any alerts. For now, think I
will just keep doing as I have been and hope for the best.

Thanx again for your input, and enjoy your evening. Want some snow, we got
some extra noone wants. LOL

We got a little ice and slush this morning just to remind us what season we
are really in. So far it's been almost shirt-sleeve weather in the middle
of the east coast.

If you want a reasonable deal for a year, you can look at:

http://windowsonecare.com

(requires XP and 256 megs of available ram (i.e. 256 megs and a video
arrangement that shares the ram doesn't work.))

Java is a sore point for lots of folks at the moment. The current Sun Java
is version 5 rev 06
(which reads various ways depending on where you look. If you look here:
http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

it reads 1.5.0_06

After updating Java you should to to add or remove programs and remove the
older versions which will otherwise collect until your disk fills up. There
are cases of apps which require a specific older version, but most people
don't see these dependencies.

Definitely not shirt sleeve weather here. Guess they expect a possible Nor
Easter tomorrow nite. I'll look into those places, have to have hubby tell me
exactly what I have for space too. Got to check the version of java I have
also. Thanx again, and stay warm....:)

They're talking about 2-5 inches of snow tonight here, and the kids are
ready to have a day off school......

Dear Bill

It IS basic to clean out the temporarily junkyard.

MS and you can say/write what you want but this "graveyard"
within a living PC must be removed.........!

And if some "lamers" (sorry about the expression) have some
files, cookies or password stored within this junk they must learn a
lesson to not store this material within these folders.

This IS totally wrong built from the beginning.

Castlecops and probably "Negster22" have done a excellent
work with their wiki about removals.

Done !

PS Now I am angry and must try One care.................. DS

Bill Sanderson was thinking very hard :

I'll freely admit that one operation I routinely do on machines when time is
available, is to clean the TIF. I do this at a command prompt, by hand. I
like doing it this way because finding something that cannot be removed is
an excellent pointer to malware in place. And it doesn't take long, and it
doesn't require downloading another app to each box, etc.

I don't believe that it makes any difference to performance of the machine,
but I do it anyway....

--

Yes, I also do my TIF's each nite also, but I do it thru Nortons. I just
click on the clean sweep thing and take em out.

As far as my Java thing, I definitely do not have it up to date, so will
have to do that. When I went into the thing to look, the automatic update
thing wasn't checked off, so looks like I have the version that came with the
machine last year. Oh well, will have to do it before I hit the sack tonight.

Thanx again for the info. as I would have never checked the java thing, but
I do check it each nite and delete anything in there, as about 6 months ago I
got some worm that was associated with java, and read on the web how to get
rid of it. Man, U really have to stay on top of these things, and U still get
things.

Hopefully the kids will enjoy the snow, I know I won't, but then again, I'm
not a kid. Nite....:)

G'night--snow not too heavy yet, youngest kid disappointed so far.

I believe the Java install will ask if you want the Google toolbar. This is
not nice behavior for a security update in my opinion. If you don't already
have it, don't add it through this mechanism.

Hi JJ

About Java:

- First remove MS Java withhelp from this URL.

http://www.merijn.org/uninstmsjava.html

And then go to www.java.com and upgrade to latest version.

About junk and TIF:

It is much more junk within a PC normally hidden and I absolute
recommend to clean out this mess.

CCleaner is a safe and moderate tool for that, www.ccleaner.com

And an about snow and Christmas.......... ;)

http://www.gavle.se/gavlebocken/

But some bastards burned it down this weekend but they will rebuild it.

Hi plun. A friend of mine stopped by today, looked at the java and said I was
up to date. Thank goodness someone knows what to look for. LOL I thought the
automatic update thing wasn't on, guess it was.

I hear ya about cleaning out the mess, that is why I make sure each nite I
do a complete cookie cleanup, both on IE and on My computer, then I run clean
sweep from Nortons and then a disk cleanup. After I do that, I usually run
Nortons one button checkup, that tells me if anything is messed up.

Like I told Bill, after getting those 2 worms a few weks ago, I am being as
cautious as possible, they weere a nightmare to get rid of, and being a
novice with XP, I felt lucky to have geeks to go for the help of getting rid
of them. They are the ones who told me to install MSA once my machine was
clean, so far, so good.

I looked at the picture, couldn't understand the writing, but am guessing
someone burned down the decoration? Not nice, where is the Holiday spirit?
Sheez, some people are weird. Thanx for your input, as always, I appreciate
folks help, as I get a lil confused with this new machine at times.

Take care, and TTYS.....:)
