One of my applications directories is tens of MB in size. It has many
sub directories. I want a quick way to find out which directories/sub
directories are over a certain size eg. >1MB.

Is there a windows program/utility to do this please ?

I do not want to have to check each directory/sub directory one
by one.

Regards, John.

Go here and have a look at the specs for DiskData which is a wonderful
app.

http://www.diskdata.com/default.htm

There are freeware builds about - I have 2.2 which is very good. Dunno
if it is about on the web, but I could put it somewhere if you want.

There is a very nice piece of nagware here:

http://www.silurian.com/win32/chart.htm

This gives a 'find' option to, er, find any folder above a certain user
specified size. I like this one a lot.

I use SpaceMonger for this. Just scan the drive and then zoom in on
problem directories. http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html

This is quick, convenient and integrates nicely.

Well tested under both 2k/xp.

Hi, as one more ap to consider: http://www.explorerxp.com/ .

Thanks, but that doesn't appear to provide a quick way to get the
answer. I am trying to avoid looking through thousands of
directories/sub directories one by one. In any case it appears to
be a 2000/XP only program. Probably not good on my '98 system.

Thanks for the suggestion however.

Thanks, I do have something like that already. It doesn't however find
me the answer unless every sub folder was expanded to show it's size.
Even then all folders over a certain size would not be together.

Thanks for the suggestion however.

Would TreeSize be useful? http://www.jam-software.com

from the Readme.txt
TreeSize can be started from the context menu of a folder or drive and shows
you the size of this folder, including its subfolders. You can expand this
folder in Explorer-like style and you will see the size of every subfolder.
Scanning is done in a thread, so you can already see results while TreeSize
is working. The space, which is wasted by the file system can be displayed
and the results can be printed in a report.

2xExplorer has a tool which will show all sizes of all directories. It
sorts them by size - This may not be quite precise enough for you
however.

SC-DiskInfo is an easy to use disk space usage analyzer that allows you
to see which folders take up the most space. It displays number of
subdirectories, file count and overall size, as well as a graphical
chart display to quickly spot the largest folders. You can sort the
report for all columns. At installation, you have the option to
integrate SC-DiskInfo with Windows Explorer.

Note: This software requires Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows 2003
and does not work with Windows 95/98/Me/NT.

SC-DiskInfo is free for personal use. For licensing information please
contact Soft-Central.

I haven't had time to thoroughly test every recommendation BUT
here are my "first impressions".

http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/

WinDirStat - windirstat1_1_1-exe-ansi.zip (635 KB).

Shows directories but one needs to click individual directories to get
sub directories. I have no idea if/how one gets all directories and
sub directories together that are over 1MB.

DiskSpaceChart dskchart.exe (190 KB)

Pretty. "Find" can find folders/sub folders >1MB but not able to
copy/paste the results. :-(

Program: DiskData
Ware: (Freeware) v 2.2.0.138
ddsetup.exe (389 KB)

It showed individual file sizes in selected directories. I only want
directory and sub directory sizes. Preferably only those over a
certain size eg. > 1MB.

SequoiaView.
Sequoia1.3Install.zip (454 KB).
No directory/sub directory names list but >1MB filtering.

SpaceMonger. Download spmn140.zip - Version 1.4.0 -
Win95/98/NT/2K/XP - (103 KB)
Horrible layout. No "list" of biggest > smallest directories. No way
to show only >1MB directories and sub directories.

ExplorerXP file manager for Windows 2000/XP
Not fitting for my '98 system.

Folder Size Shell Extension. fsse32.exe [Download - 180KB]
No directory/sub directory list. No way to quickly see only >1MB
items.

TreeSize (681KB) No directory/sub directory list. No way to quickly
see only >1MB items.

2xExplorer, now xplorer² xplorer2_lite.zip
Couldn't see how to list directories AND sub directories over >1 MB.

SC-DiskInfo does not work with Windows 95/98/Me/NT.

And the winner is.....

sysinternals has a util called folrep (i think) with printout and to
html capability IIRC

folrep (23KB).

Thanks ProteanThread, and the other contributors. :-)

2xExplorer, now xplorer² xplorer2_lite.zip
Couldn't see how to list directories AND sub directories over >1 MB.

In 2xExplorer (I dislike the newer versions xplorer2 )
Click Tools, Folder Data,
Click the + next to the directory name for the subdirectories.
Directories and subdirectories are listed in size order. (No problem
for me showing the sizes of larger directories)

I can't see a way to print this, or a practical way to extract the
info so I really don't think it will suit your needs after all
particularly as you have found something that works for you!

FolderSize

the size of all the folders.
The size can be viewed in bytes, percentage of total space or as a bar
graph.
This is a standalone EXE. No installer, DLL's or Registry entries
needed. To get rid of it, simply delete the EXE.

This seems to be just what you asked for except for one *fatal* flaw -
the smallest size range you can set is 0-50MB.

rats. . .

Posting it anyway in case someone else is interested. It's fast, no
install, no register entries, *KISS*. . . A very nice little app. :)
