Finding hardware - 100 miles away

I bought a USB to Serial port bridge.
It came with no drivers on the CD.
I discovered that it was a Prolific USB to Serial Bridge.
I downloaded and installed the drivers.
It didn't work properly, so I returned it. 100 miles away.

Windows XP keeps finding the "New Hardware", even though it is long gone.

How do I cure Windows XP of this delusion?

Rather than cancel the dialog, just proceed as if you are going to install
the device.
Eventually, once no drivers are located, Windows should prompt you as to
whether or not you want
to be prompted again. (Say "no" of course.)

I'll try that, but the first prompt that I get is complaining that it
cannot find a specific file (xxxxx.sys) and I don't have much choice
other than cancelling out of that dialog.

I haven't seen it recently, so perhaps it has gone away.
