I know how to select a different colour scheme for Powerpoint 2003
Format/Slide Design/Colour Schemes. I also know that by clicking Edit Colour
Schemes at the bottom of the right-hand-side panel, I can change any
component of any of the 12 schemes provided.

However I just don't have a good eye for colour combinations. Are
alternative schemes available for download anywhere?

I don't know of any 'colour schemes' that you can just download and add.

Most come as part of a template.

I did find this page to help you see what complements each colour.

You can use this interactive application to choose colors

Not that I know of, but somebody else might.
However, there are several very useful color scheme generators on the net.
Google "color scheme" and follow some of the resulting links.

Play around and once you find a scheme you like, it'll be simple enough to
transfer the RGB values into PPT (especially since you're already well up to
speed on editing schemes).
