Hi, My dell xps r450 crashed with blue screen, after days of struggle,
I installed win 2000 professional as the new operating system. Now I
can see my drive and folders but I have lots of problems:
1. network card does work, can't get on LAN nor Internet. Win2000 does
not identify hdc and ethernet controller and claim there are no
drivers for them (Before crash in NT 4.0, they were running, I guess
new drivers are needed but I can't find them any where, not on CD nor
web. Can anyone help?

2. Printer won't print, I have a hp laser jet 1100 directly connected,
printer functions just won't print any thing sent sent by applications.
May be port issue?

3. Word program won't do graphic conversion, when I open my old files
containing image the image got lefted out. It tells me can't do graphic
conversion but offering no solution.

4. I suspect my other applications don't work well either. Photoshop
and front page, I don't seem to find any support stuff for what I am
experiencing.

Does anyone experienced this forced migration before and found the fast
cure? Any tip is appreciated.

Thanks,

Lightman

1.) Did you install the chipset drivers? Go to the dell web site and enter
in your service tag then check for Windows 2000 driver downloads.

2.) Might be chipset related.

3.) Try asking them here.

If it were me then I'd get hold of the necessary mobo chipset drivers, and
other drivers, start a new clean install, install chipset, then peripheral
drivers, then patch the machine fully, then install software.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Thanks for the tips. I guess I did take the short cut. The win 2000
installed alright. I then reinstalled office and adobe stuff they all
OK. I did not delete NT 4.0 yet. The win 2000 identify two unknown
hardware one it just calls hdc and the other ethernet controller it is
the latter I can't find a driver for. Dell site had a download 9456T
(11MB) supposedly for win 2000 and xps r450 machine but the file after
unzip does not reveal any obvious install procedure. My guess is the
chips and hardware seem to be OK, I just wish that I can get a driver
so I can be online then I can download stuff to do the proper upgrades.
Any one knows the driver file name for the PCI ethernet controller,
please reply. Much oblidged.
