In some address lists you can begin typing a name and the program finds the
progressive letters as you type. I can't seem to make that work in Outlook.
Is there a setting for this? Or is this not an option in the program?
Thanks for any help

Appreciatively,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

which Outlook version?

Normally you find a list of the folders you want to check the emailaddress
under:

Tools/Addressbook/Tools/Options

Here you can add or delete the folders you want to check.

Sorry my post was not clear. Office, Outlook 2003. Contacts. Looking for
last name. Smith for example. Some desktop address lists will allow simply
typing S then M and etc., ... results landing on all last names starting
with SM

Hi Jerry,

sorry maybe I understand you question wrong, because I am living in germany
and I am not a native speaker.

Contacts:
if I search for a name in Outlook (for example Smith) i click on a contact
folder for "sm" i get all results with an "SM" in the contact. You will get
also a contact with "small street" because it include an "sm".

If I create an email and I insert "sm" in the "To" field , than I use
"ctrl+K" and I will get all names and emailadresses with a "sm" in a list,
also "Smith". If I search for "S_ M" I get all contacts with an "S" or an
"M".

What did I understand wrong?

Oliver:
No! It is not you, but I, who does not understand.
Where does one find the box in which to type in sm. On the side of my
contact screen all I have is the alphabet? I have to click on S and then
scroll down to find my SM or what ever. In my old palm program, once I
loaded contacts, if I started typing ...sm or whatever, as illustrated, it
would take me right to the sm in the list. Sorry, but I am new to Outlook
and the Contact feature. However, appreciate any help

I understand your confusion. "Contacts" are kept or stored in the Contacts
folder. Outlook stores the auto fill or auto complete information in
another file that is not related to your Contacts folder. It is in this
other (auto complete) file that will complete e-mail addresses. If you want
more info. about this file, your can e-mail me at
(e-mail address removed).

I'll be happy to try to help!
Contacts are called when you press the To: button. However,

Hi Jerry,

I have OL2002, so I hope MS does not change to much in the shortcuts in
OL2003.

a.) Search functions in a selected contact folder:
If I select a contact folder I have in the menu a "search for" field. In
this field I write "SM" and click on the search button. Than all contacts
with SM are listed.

If you don´t see the "search field" go under "Tools/search...." or select
"Ctrl + E" than you will get the search field.

b.) Search for a contact if you write an email:
this is the function i explained if you write an email and you want to
search for a special address in your contact folders

I think that you haven´t selected the "search" function under tools?
