FIND no longer works

When I open FIND (START-F), I get (from memory) an initial choice of
pictures, documents, Files and Folders. Until yesterday, when I
selected Files and Folders I would get a series of boxes where I could
type in the file name and location and do a search. Now, when I select
Files and Folders, nothing happens. I have to use Documents.
How do I get Files and Folders to work?
Any way to bypass the selections and go straight to Find Files and
Folders with akeystroke?

what appens when you just open an explorer window and press F3?

Well, I get the search window but - same thing. Clicking on 'All files
and folders' does nothing.
