I used to use my PAB for keeping track of my contacts until my recent
move to using the contacts folder within my mailbox instead of my PAB.
I imported my pab data into my contact folder but now when i start a
new message, click on to: and then find and do a search for a text
string contained within full name field it comes up blank. i used to
be able to search for this same text string when all the data was
contained in my PAB. What is the deal here? If i exit the message
and go into my contacts and choose tools/find and enter the same text
string as above it finds the contacts i am looking for. Any ideas how
to get this to work? Thanks in advance.

If you check the Contact Records that were imported from the PAB, are all
the Name, Display as and File As... fields populated correctly?

It looks like the file as name is the same as the Full Name field.
When one does a find is it the file as field that gets searched in the
scenario below? I did not see a disply as....Thanks for the help.

In Outlook 2000 you won't see the "Display As" field until you double click
the email field in the Contact Record.

Another thing to check is how the individual name elements are parsed when
you click on Full Name... The PAB had a nasty habit of storing both the
First and Last names in the same field, and that quirk might have carried
over.

I guess the main rason why i was trying to import the PAB in the first
place was that the user is having issues changing the email address
within the PAB and getting it to stick. The changes made to the PAB
just wont apply. It looks as though everything transfered over the way
the user had there PAB setup. Example, in there PAB they used a name
such as 3M-John Doe for the display name within the PAB. When
transfered over to a contact 3M-John Doe was copied into the display
name for the email address as well as the full-name field, so you are
right, they did carry over. If you have any ideas on how to get the
changes to apply within the PAB i would just have the user use that?
There are 800 or so contacts in her PAB. I have tried using her PAB
on my machine but have same problem mentioned above. Is there a limit
on the size of a PAB that we have reached? Thanks again for all the
help and i hope some of this info helps.

In the long run, you'll be much better off migrating away from the PAB
entirely. I;m still not clear from your description what happened with your
import from the PAB. It is not the Full Name field I'm wanting to know
about, it is the individual name elements from which the Full Name field is
derived (you know, Title, First Middle, Last, Suffix...) Did those get
populated correctly? If so, we may be able to fix things up with some
routing maintenance.

BTW, did you follow one of these strategies for migrating from the PAB to
the Contacts Folder?

Thanks again for your help on this. Those fields, First Name, Last
Name, Title, etc did not populate. It is only the Display name as
that is the field she put both the first and last name in. What a
mess huh? When she created the PAB entry she just put the full name
and company in the display name, IE: John Doe-3M. Is there an easy
way of getting these things put into individual fields like the first
name, last name, company, etc or is it just easiest to start from
scratch. Thanks for the link too, that is helpful and will be useful
when we have to do this again.

Not that I know of, and that was what I was afraid of. The PAB was an odd
duck. It put both First and Last Names in the same field, so importing from
it could cause problems with parsing of name elements.

Probably the easiest way of doing this is to have her start from
scratch and stick them in the contacts?
Also, when creating a number of contacts. One starts a new mail,
clicks on the to button and then chooses the contact folder you want
outlook to view and then click find does this search through just the
display name or is this find option searching through the whole
contact? I was having problems getting it to find the correct contact
when I was doing my searches so didn't know if there was some way to
configure it so you could have it search the company field or just the
First Name field, etc etc. Thanks again for the help.

Now you've lost me. When you invoke the Outlook Address Book using the To:
field, there is no "Find" option. Find and Advanced Find are available in
the Contacts Folder.
