Find and Replace

I have a document in which the writer often fails to put a space between a
word or number and the parenthetical expression following the word or number;
for example, "one large(ripe) tomato." Since it appears so often, I tried
replacing with the following expression:
Find: ([0-9A-z])(\() and Replace with \1 \2

Why do I keep getting the message "The find what text contains a pattern
match which is not valid."

Thanks for all you do!

Poor old Word! It gets confused sometimes.

The pattern should *work* but the parentheses are too much for it to cope
with. A couple of workarounds are:

([0-9A-z])([\(])
([0-9A-z])(\(?)

Both worked, Tony! Thanks soooo much!
