Find and replace re page numbering

Dear old friends of mine:

One of the lawyers I work for requested that I format a
document exactly like the example he handed me. The page
numbering contained the Article No. followed by a period
followed by the page number (the numbering scheme was
Article I, 1.1, 1.1.1).

Since I didn't know what else to do, in the page number
formatting dialog box I included the Chapter No. and it
picked up the article number successfully. BUT it
appeared as I.1 instead of the Arabic 1.1 he wanted.

Could I have used find and replace in the footer to
change the Roman numerals to Arabic; if so, how? Or did
I go about the whole process the wrong way in the first
place?

I've got a feeling the answer is a simple one that just
hasn't dawned on me yet.

Thanks!!!

If the document has been formatted with styles, then you should be able to
use a Styleref field to reproduce the Article and a Page field to produce
the number. However, your example seems to include a lot of unexplained
numbers.

In the numbering outline, "Article I" was Heading 1.
When I placed a Styleref to Heading 1 in the
footer, "Article I" appeared in the footer. Is there a
switch or a find and replace that would have magically
turned "Article I" into an Arabic 1 as a reference to
Heading 1, without the word "Article," after which I
could have placed a Pageref field? In other words, the
footer should read "1.1" instead of "Article I.1."

This crazy scheme was certainly not my idea, but now that
the problem has been presented to me, I can't sleep until
I know the answer.

I am totally puzzled by your description.

Article I - if that's the content of Heading1 style - will reproduce with a
styleref field as Article I

Where does the rest come from

i.e 1.1, 1.1.1 ?

Pageref fields concern the pages that bookmarks appear on and can be
formatted in any number format by using a switch.

It looks as though you will not be getting much sleep as I will be away all
day tomorrow :)

The 1.1 and 1.1.1 doesn't really have anything to do with
my problem. I don't even know why I threw that in. It's
only Heading 1 that I'm concerned with, since the page
numbering should reference it.

I guess my real question was how to get "Article I.1"
(which is what the Styleref produces in the footer) to
read 1.1 (without the word "Article" and using Arabic
numbers) and should not have confused the issue with
anything else. I won't blame you if you stop trying to
understand me, Graham.
