Finally! Found A Good CODEC Pack!

I've tried many separate and bundled free CODEC packs for Media Player
Classic, etc, and always came up short. Something always seemed to not work;
some movies always didn't play correctly or didn't play at all.

Well, on someone's recommendation, I tried the K-Lite bundle, and it didn't
work either. Then I ran across the K-Lite "full" bundle. Voila! :) Finally,
all my stuff works on MPC!

My recommendation is to fire all your CODEC's that don't work 100% and get
the full K-Lite bundle. It's hefty at 6.7mb, but worth it in saved
frustration.

It should be pointed out that this pack includes DivX Pro and the
Cyberlink DVD Decoder, both of which are commercial products and
definitely NOT freeware.

Thanks for alerting us. Would be bad to undertake such a big download,
only to find that out!

Thanks for posting this!

Take a look at the gspot site - the next version will have the ability to
selectively unregister those codecs that underperform.

Ffdshow unofficial build supports all that and is about 10 times smaller.

I second that! Codec packs suck big time people. You install a bunch of
unneeded codecs "just in case" just to figure out that in the end it
screws up your system.

ffdshow is a directshow filter that plays all divx/xvid files I feed it.

You can find the latest ffdshow build here:
http://www.ligh.de/software/mirrors.phtml

As 95% of audio streams are mp3, the above filter is all you need in
most cases. For the other 5% with ac3 or divx audio streams, just
install these:

ac3-filter
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

divx audio
http://www.divx-digest.tv/software/codec/divx_audio_402.zip

Greets!

I must admit you're probably right... I just installed the K-Lite Codec
Pack (Full Version) and my mouse died... now I'm using a serial mouse.
Don't know what happened, or if it's just co-incidence, but still, it
matches what you said above. :(

Sorry to hear that! Hope you can fix that mouse of yours. After doing
that you can try out ffdshow and the audio codecs I mentioned. You won't
be disappointed :-)

I tried all that stuff, and it didn't play half of my movies.

As I said, I tried many different packs, and nothing played all my stuff
until I tried the K-Lite Mega pack.

The good thing about K-Lite is that no CODECS are duplicated or
incompatible. I won't argue with success. It works, the others didn't. I'm
finally happy that I can play all my stuff.

Are you saying these CODEC's will quit working?

I tried it. It didn't work for several of my movies. This bundle has not
been updated since May of 2003!

You can find the latest ffdshow build here:
http://www.ligh.de/software/mirrors.phtml

Latest version is ffdshow-20040113.exe (that's January 2004), although the last
"official" alpha build you refer to will play mpeg-4 files just as reliably,
unless the standard changed without me noticing (highly unlikely :-).

Anyway, ffdshow plays all my mpeg-4 files (divx, xvid, mp43,...), and I've been
using it for more than a year. Maybe you are confusing standards here. ffdshow
won't play mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 reliably (yet), nor will it play mjpeg.

The best way to work is to install the codecs or filters *when you need them*.
Installing an entire codec pack could eventually mess up your system.

Cheers!

I see that I have a ffdshow directory in my C drive (winxp pro) but I
don't know how it got there and I don't remember installing ffdshow by
itself.

Anyway, how do I check the version of the ffdshow that's in my PC?

Thanks.

Aren't you lucky :-)

It was probably part of some no-brain codec pack you installed.

You can check it by going to start menu - ffdshow - configuration -
about. The version date will be shown.

Bye!
