This is included on the download page for VISTA RC1.
"Upgrade limitations
You may not be able to upgrade your installation of Windows Vista RC1 to the
final, commercially available edition of Windows Vista. To upgrade, you will
need to acquire the final edition of Windows Vista and you may have to do a
clean installation."
My guess is that if enough changes occur before the retail version, they
would want to start fresh. Since Micosoft is not guaranteeing that you can, I
wouldn't bet on it.
I think if you have XP you could use the upgrade version, but that's only my
opinion.
I think more information will be available when VISTA is released for sale.
Also there are 5 versions of VISTA that will be available.
I remember reading that Microsoft said that you MIGHT not be able to do
this. Also, once the RTM version is out, it is always best to do a clean
install. This way, there will be no lingering Beta code to cause any
possible problems. Of course, one might argue that ALL versions of
Microsoft's OS are a beta!! ;\)
