For anyone with same problem ...
Bought FF7 in 1998 and have never been able to get it to work across 4/5
pc's till now.
Installed FF7 on XP Pro pc and updated with Nvidia patch which brings it to
1.02.
Ran FFConfig were it finally detected 3D affects card. Left nVidia
unchecked.
After doing so, game ran intro etc. but would repeatedly ask for cd in drive
even though it was there.
After repeated searching found a crack package that included cracks for
versions 1.00,1.01 & 1.02 and a method for "avoiding" video playing
problems. The 1.02 crack accepted the ff7.exe as input file and stated
"successfull". Game started and ran, accepting cd in drive but hung on
playing opening video sequence even though same avi file plays fine
standalone in WMP. Did the "video problem" work around and game started
after "skipping" opening video sequence (e.g. didn't hang though).
Observation then led me to try ...
Created movies folder and copied all movies off all 3 play cd's into folder.
Note play disk 2 gave an error copying 3 files (same type error as trying to
copy vob files off dvd, e.g. command not accepted - or similar). Used
UltraISO to manually copy the reticent 3 files.
Created image file(s) for Alcohol 120's virtual cd drive from orginal cd(s).
Edited registry so game looked for cd on virtual drive (normally set to
installation cd drive).
Added a "moviepath" key with value pointed at "install dir/movies" folder,
e.g. similar to existing key for "data".
Mount image in virtual drive and started game.
EVERYTHING WORKS exactly as I expected when I bought game 7/8 years ago!!!
Also, copied game and merged registry key into 2nd pc with 98SE and also
running nVidia card and it now works on it also (something I could never get
going before). Still craps out using 98SE and Radeon in 3rd pc
Whole damn installed folder along with petinenet registry keys now being
copied to a DVD so never have to go through same bs again
Posted simply because I suspect there's others may have also given up on the
game ever running (as I had for some time).
