Filter problem

I (along with my boss) have experienced a problem with filters – in 2000 &
2003. They occasionally stop responding. The buttons to make the drop-down
selection are there, but when you click on them nothing happens. I noticed
that it seems to happen more frequently when there’s a large amount of data
(which is when you need the filter option most). It also seems to occur when
there’s a significant amount of highlighted data. The ‘normal’ fix is to
remove the filters, save the file, exit Excel, and try again. It is a pretty
effective (albeit time-consuming) work-around, but it doesn’t always work.
Can you offer any suggestions?
 
I'm experiencing the same thing. It was very embarrasing when I had this
problem while I was projecting my spreadsheet during a meeting. I found that
to release this locked up situation I would have to Show_All, then release
the Auto_Filter, then highlight the entire worksheet, Format_Row_Unhide, then
set the Auto_Filter back on. Is there a system fix to this?
