Filter a field prior to reviewing a Report

I would like to create a report in Access 97 whereby the user can filter in
one field to select one of 18 alternatives. The report is to provide details
appertaining to that selection, or to all items. Can anyone advise please? I
am fairly inexperienced at Access.
