I need to run a procedure that will look at my record id
and add these digits to the right of my field "parent" .
This will take place where item id is null

For example

record id parent

1 00010000001
2 00010000002
3 00010000003

it will continue while record is in the field but parent
is null.

This is almost certainly a very bad idea. If RecordID is an Autonumber
it's not controllable - if you ever Replicate, for instance, it will
become random and your next value might be -3314190312. In addition,
storing data redundantly is unwise, as is storing two pieces of
information in one field.

If you just want to *display* [parent], simply include the RecordID in
your query twice, and set the format of the second instance to

"0001"0000000

What I am doing is for an EDI Project.

I am gathering most of the information from my SQL
database but there are certain fields that must be
inserted for identity purposes. The record id is an
automatic number. The parent id are characters that
follow a certain rule such as:

Record ID = 22 then Parent ID will be=00010000022
this will have to be iserted so that it will be reflected
on the edi transaction.

What would you suggest?

I'd recommend not storing it in the table at all; instead, calculate
it on the fly with an expression

ParentID: "0001" & Format([ID], "0000000")

If you really really need to store it redundantly, run an Update query
updating ParentID to this expression. ParentID must be of Text type to
do this (there's too many digits for Long Integer, and you'ld lose the
leading zeros).
 
so if there were 20 records with record id 5 then there
the ItemID would continue on to 00010000020

How will these records be entered? In a Form, programatically, or
what?

You'll need a little bit of code to increment the number but the code
will differ depending on the context.

with values from 0 to 10000 or so (I have this table in pretty much
every database, it often comes in handy). Base your Append query on a
query joining Numbers without a Join line; put a criterion on N of

but don't connect the two tables.

On the Criteria line under N put the number of records you want to

I am also trying to update a table with a recordid field
based on my table 1 recordid which is an autonumber. I
want my table2 recordid to be the max of my recordid
(autonumber) is in table1

I am having a lot of problems, and dont quite now why.

Here is what I thought the query should be like.

UPDATE [tbl_0002_(N1)Name]
SET [tbl_0002_(N1)Name].RecordID = (select max (recordid)
from [tbl_0001_(W06)Warehouse Shipment ID]

But it keeps telling it not an updateable query.

You need a WHERE clause after the HAVING line:

Ok... you're making some big assumptions here.

Access is intrinsically a multiuser system.

Suppose while you're editing Row Number 31 another user deletes Row
Numbers 1, 2, and 3? Is it acceptable that your row number suddenly
changes to 28?

Suppose you have Row Number 8 written down on a 3M PostIt(TM) note. A
user, again, deletes records 1, 2, and 3. The information formerly
pointed to by 8 is now pointed to by 5. Is that satisfactory?

FORGET row numbers! They are *not* a good idea in any modern
relational database system.

I did not explain myself right, what I need to do is base
it on the number of records inserted within this process.

So if I insert 5 records then the first sequence would be
00001, then 000003 etc . Within the same query process.

As far as I know this can only be done if you know ahead of time how
many records there will be. Will you?
