How do I fill-in a pre-printed form or certificate with WORD 2003 that I
purchased in a store?

For one-off forms the amount of effort required to match the text areas with
the fillable areas of the form is simply unjustified. Use a pen. For a
certificate the amount of work is somewhat less.

Scan the certificate and set it as a background image *at full size* in the
header view. Locate the text area(s) with a table or tables.
Remove the image before printing (or use the macro at
http://www.gmayor.com/Optionally_print_letterhead.htm) to print it without
the image.

It doesn't matter - it's only a guide. Try JPG

Graham ... I am grateful for your time ... but you lost me. I opened a
document, inserted a header, inserted the scanned .jpg certificate and then
all went to hell. I did not understand what you meant by "tables." Don't
want to take a lot of your time and expertise ... is there an article to
which you can refer me? I am lost. Thanks

If you have the scanned image placed in the header view. Right click the
image and set its layout property to 'behind text' and its size to 100%
Close the header view and then you have a plain document space with your
image in the background over which you can enter text. The simplest way to
locate the text positions is to use a table that has its cells placed where
you want to write (or you could draw borderless text boxes, if the numbers
of text areas are few.)

Print a sample on plain paper and hold it over the original certificate.
When you are satisfied that the text is in the correct position, open the
header view again and delete the graphic. Then print on the certificate.
