I upgraded to Windows Home xp 2 days ago. Since then I've got 2 major
problems: 1) all of my saved documents in Microsoft Word 2000 are coming up
as "read only" files and when I click on attributes it won't let me uncheck
that box, and; 2) my Avery Label Progam will open up but I've lost all of my
saved labels...does anyone know how to solve these problems?

Try taking ownership of the files.

1) In Win9x/WinME files were either Read Only or they weren't. In XP, there
is a new third state "indeterminate." The traditional read only is still a
check/X. The new state shows up as a shaded box in the square. You cannot
remove the square. It's meaning: Some restriction (access permissions or
other factors) may apply to the object.

Further, XP utilizes the unused Read Only state of folders for
customizations purposes. It should be left alone.

If you truly have read only files and want to remove the attribute, select
the files in bulk - not the folders - and remove the read only attribute in
the selected group's properties. Or use the command line interface to
accomplish the same. Commands and syntax are in the help files and
available in Help for the command line interface.

NTFS and permissions will protect a user's files - allowing access only to
the owner and those with permission to view them. "Taking ownership" of
files is a way to regain access to protected files. I don't think that's
the problem here but just in case:

If you are dealing with the "lock" that Word can place on a user's Word
files - that's another ball of wax. Head over to the Office newsgroups for
info on dealing with this situation.

2) For the most part application data is saved on a per user basis in XP:
\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\
\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\

Win9x/WinME tended to keep this same information under \Windows\Application
Data\ and in some cases in a hierarchy of user profile folders also stored
under \Windows\. If you upgraded from one of those versions of Windows and
unless you took very specific steps, the information in those folders is
probably gone. Reference:

Data or Program Settings Are Missing After You Install Windows XP

On the other hand, if Avery stored the saved labels somewhere else, you may
still be able to find them and migrate them over to the proper location.
"Somewhere else" could be under Program Files - another common location
used under Win9x/WinME for application data. The Avery help file or online
technical documentation may have more info on the location of saved files.
