Files open very slowly in Xp

I have a Windows Xp user with a baffling problem.

Every time he tries to open any file the PC takes about 30
seconds to open it. If I context click on the file it
also takes about the same time.

If I open the file from 'Run', the files open straight
away. If I disable the network device, the file opens
straight away. This is whether in safe mode or not.

The NIC is a Broadcom 10/100/1000 onboard adaptor. The PC
is an HP D330 and has no apparent resource problems. Xp
is fully patched. I have scanned for virus, ran Ad-aware,
done a SFC check, re-installed drivers and re-installed
the network printer.

We have many machines like this without issue.

Could anyone please help or suggest anything? The OS is
OEM and will not re-install without wiping everything and
starting again.

Is he using maped network drives/folders. If the shortcuts
are pointing to the network then it has to make a loop
from the computer through the network and back again.

Check for any association that might tell you how the file
is related to your network.

One thing you can check for when opening and saving files
is the Line speed and duplex settings on the network card.
Try to be sure they are set the same as the configuration
of the ports on the switch they are plugged into. These
settings are located in the Network card properties.
Incorrect settings can slow the network traffic to and
from the workstation or drop the connection all together.
Although Auto-Negotiate works it is often best to set the
settings yourself. It is the only way to be sure things
are the way they should be.

As for the right click on a file being slow, this seams to
be a very common problem. I have no solution, but always
experience the same problems at my workplace with any PC's
that are plugged into the network. If they are not plugged
in, right clicking on files brings up the menus much
faster.

Good Luck
