I have two computers with Windows XP Home and Professional connected via
router in a network. Everything seems all right when both of them are in
some work. But if one of them is switched off or hibernated it takes about
30 seconds or even more to open a file on the working computer. There is no
difference on type of the file or if I use a mouse or don't. If anybody has
a clue to the problem the help will be appreciated. Both computers use
firewall ZoneAlarm and antivirus nod32.

1. The OP did not say whether this problem is new or has been
going on for years.
2. MS Fast Find settings can cause slow opening of files: it is
wiser to configure this OFF for all files.

1. This problem is not new and has been going on for years. It is not the
first time I write about it to news groups, but nobody could help me sofar.
2. No FastFind was found in registry. Indexing service is disabled from
Windows XP. If it were FastFind guilty in the problem it would exist even
without the second computer, but it does not.

If I recall correctly (IIRC) this problem could be related to the system
doing a search for an invalid or disconnected network share. There is a
registry fix but I don't remember it. Try posting to the network newsgroup.

It sounds as if you have made the directories on the systems available to
each other by mapping the shared directories on each system. Get rid of
mapped drives just use Explorer to navigate to the desired directory. If the
target system is off you will get a system unavailable message but the system
you are working on will navigate its directories just fine. Of course you
need to have shared the directories. Good luck with this. George
