Greetings Travis,
Files automatically open in the program that Windows thinks you want to use.
Windows makes this decision based on the three letter extension of the file
(e.g. filname.txt will open in Notepad unless you have altered this
preferance).
If you want to have the file open in another program, you can specify that
very easily. Just right-click on the file, and select "open with..." and
"Choose Program..."
Specify which program you want the particular file type to be opened with,
and check the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file".
