This is driving me crazy. There is no logic in whose
directories show up under the "Files on This Computer"
(FOTC) section of My Computers.

As a test, I created two new Restricted user accounts
using the same Admin account, one called Mike the other
called Hesper.

I log on as Hesper. Under FOTC I see Shared and Hesper's
folders.

I log on as Mike. Under FOTC I see Shared and Hesper's
folders. i.e. the SAME as for Mike. I don't see Mike's
folder. I don't think this is right, but read on...

Back as Admin, I create a new account Michael Bloggs. I
log on as him. Under FOTC I see Shared and Hesper's
folders.

Back as Admin, I create a new account Hesper Bloggs. I
log on as her. Under FOTC I see Shared, Hesper Bloggs'
and Hesper's folders.

I log on as Mike. Under FOTC I see Shared, Hesper
Bloggs' and Hesper's folders.

So, why does XP refuse to show any of Mike's folders, and
why does it always show Hesper's??

This is driving me mad!!

Thanks,
Mike

Limited accounts would only see their own documents folders and shared
documents.

Are you using fast user switching during this little experiment? If yes,
try standard log offs and log ons. Have you tried logging on to each
account twice? The first time the account is logged on, folders are
created. It may take a refresh of Explorer to update the windows contents
or, possibly, a second log on to update and load all of the relative
security pointers.

I was using standard log off/on, not fast switching. And
it still happens second and third times and beyond. I
find it very strange. I checked tweakui; nothing there
that helps.

Logging on as Admin I can see all folders. It's just
those user accounts that are behaving oddly. Is it
anything to do with creating the new accounts from the
default admin account, rather than from the base Admin
account (safe mode type Admin)?

Which administrator account they were created from should make no
difference. One thing that might -- permissions are inherited. Copying
files vs. moving will determine if that happens or not.

Also, if the system was FAT32 and then converted to NTFS, items that
existed before the conversion would be visible (permissions inherited) and
items created afterwards would have the new security IDs attached to them.
