I have a windows 2000 server sp2 with Ms office files
shared between users. Some times when the file is in use
they get the " file already open .. open as read only.."
message but sometime it allows 2 copies of the same file
to be open. This mainly occurs with excel 2000 files, how
can I get windows to stop allowing the same file to be
opened twice

Your server really should be at SP4. Download SP4 and ms03-039 and don't
connect to the internet with the server before you have those 2 installed
(else you get blasted right away).

Excel allows multiple users to edit a file if the file has been setup that
way. It has nothing to do with the server.

In Excel 2000, a user simply has to click on Tools, Share Workbook.

HI,

Thanks, but the files are setup as a shared workbook. Most
times if a user is editing the file another user will get
the message that the file is in use and the options to be
notified or to open read only. The problem is that
sometimes a user wont get this message, when you look on
the server ( computer manager - shared files -open files )
you can see the same file is open by 2 users. Does Excel
handle this or is it server file locks?

HI,
Thanks, Just inherited this setup. will apply sp4 and the
security patch and let you know

Its a function of Excel to report the lock back to the hosting file system.
If things are working properly, when 2 people try to access a shared Excel
file, neither will receive any message other than the Windows title bar will
have the word [Shared] next to the file name.

So you're saying that in your network, with a certain workbook as an
example, its configured as shared, but that sometimes a user will get
read-only and other times they wont?
