Files not detected anymore after partitioning

I tried to install Ubuntu. Canceled it before the finish. Now there
still is two partitions in my slave disk. My problem is that Windows
does not recognize the files.

I tried a couple of file recovery programs, they do not recognize my
files.

Originally I used NTFS, Ubuntu switched it to FAT, I switched back to
NTFS (after NOT seeing FAT files in Windows either).

Suggestions? Install Ubuntu and do something?

I am nearly desperate here. Recovery programs seem not to work so far.
I was about to try Partition Magic, but then read so much bad about it.

Hi,

........I was about to try Partition Magic, but then read so much bad
about it.

Partition Magic is a great program, it's just not designed to fix your
problems. At this point you don't have a lot left to lose, so keep
trying every file recovery program you can find. Hopefully one of them
will find at least some of what you're looking for.

Can you place the drive in a different computer as a slave and look from
there for things on it?

I thought about this too. Mostly to install a hd as a master and try to
do something from it. Just now cannot get any working hd, so let's see
later.

PC Inspector is running there all the time. It's very slow, maybe makes
2 days to complete. And this is only partition of 40gb. But it seems to
ind something other programs cannot, so I let it run. Unfortunately
this trial version searches only jpgs, but lost them too. With another
recovery program I already find somethinf, so I am not so desperate
anymore. Now it seems I am maybe losing only one weeks work and a
additional (quite) important folder.

I thought system recovery should be worth trying too. I have not done
it yet.

You might try Spinrite from www.grc.com.

Hi again,

.........I thought system recovery should be worth trying too. I have not
done it yet.

System Recovery probably won't help, it'll just look into fixing its own
errors, not yours.

Although I can't even tell you the name of the program I use for such
things, I uploaded it to http://jself.com/REST2514.EXE if you want to
try it. It's a small one at only 193kb.

If you would rather download the file from a "real place" instead of an
off the wall newsgroup, type in the file name in Google and you'll find
dozens of sites that host the same freeware program.
