Files not copying

Hi,

I recently attempted to reinstall my Windows XP Home edition via the
re-installation CD from Dell. When I did, the last few files, such as ntldr,
did not copy, thus the installation could not continue. I called Dell,
thinking it was the CD, and had them send me a new Windows XP disk but I
received the exact same error again. I tried using an old DOS floppy to
manually copy the files from the CD but it still didn't work. I even
attempted to use Knoppix, the CD version of Linux, to copy the whole CD to my
hard drive but Knoppix cant write on NTFS. Can someone please help me?

Thanks,
Jordnevans

File copy problems during installation are usually cause by a bad cd (you
ruled that out) a bad cd drive, faulty ram, or a faulty hard drive. My first
question would be why did you attempt the reinstall in the first place, were
you having problems?

My Windows Xp had been buggy. I became lazy and just decided to start over
from scratch. As for the CD drives (CD-RW, DVD-RW) both of them can run the
Knoppix CD but that might not even be a way to test the CD Drives. What
should I do to test the CD Drives and Hard Drive?

Thanks

Download and run Memtest http://www.memtest.org/
Determine the mfg of your hard drive and visit their website to download a
diagnostic utility.
If you get the same copy problems with both cd drives, they are likely not
the problem.

Just a thought... I've had bad power supplies give errors on fresh installs
and repairs. Just another thing to think about.
