Files making copies of themselves

Hi,

I've had windows xp for over a year now. All of a sudden
when I am moving or deleting files, a "copy" of the file
stays in the folder I moved/deleted it from. Sometimes
there are 2 to 3 copies of the same file that I either
moved or deleted. Here I am trying to get organized and
it feels like I take one step forward and two steps
backwards.

I can't find any information on this in the knowledge
base. Or else I'm just not looking in the right area!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mary

Hi, Mary.

HOW are you moving the files? Are you using the mouse to drag'n'drop? Are
all the files in a single volume? Is a network involved?

Drag'n'drop works in different ways, depending on just how you used the
mouse. For example, if we hold down the left button and drag the file to a
different folder in the same volume, Windows Moves the file. But, the same
action Copies the file if we drag it to a folder in a different volume.

If you hold down the Right button when dragging, you should see a context
menu pop up when you release the button; from this you can choose what to do
with the file.

Have you looked at the Files and folders overview and related pages in the
Help and Support file? Just click Start | Help and Support | Windows Basics
| Working with files and folders.
