I just got XP and I can't figure out how to add a
background to the file (it was customize file in 98) this
would be a background when you open the file itself, not
on the thumbnail view. I always use detail view and the
background would be behind the list.

I transferred a couple of my files from my old computer
and the desktop.ini (the configuration file) continued to
place the background on the folders.

Many thanks for any info.

Actually, I haven't I want to do this to NEW files and my
old machine is gone. Further, it was one of those try
this and that and the other and something worked
sometimes...not documented. So how do you add backgrounds
to new files without doing it on an old '98 system and
transferring over?

Many thanks, obviously wasn't clear.

You copy customised desktop.ini from one folder to another. They are text files so open in notepad. Note folders must have Read Only set on them. Use attrib at a command prompt or give it a custom icon (which marks it read only and creates a desktop, ini with the icon specified in it. Delete the line if you don't actually want the icon. The XP desktop.ini also work on 98. So

98 has a gui to set backgrounds and label colours.
XP has a gui to set the icon.

Both 98 and XP support both features even though they only has dialogs for one of them.
