Files are corrupt or unreadable

Towards the end of August, I had a number of .exe and .zip files that became
inaccessible. All were downloaded to an archive directory on my desktop or a
directory in "My Documents".

I've exceeded Toshiba's ability to support me as both SpinRite and Chkdsk
both confirm that all hard drive sectors are good. Attempting to access one
of these files will show a popup that requests chkdsk be run. This has been
done with all 5 levels showing no problem.


When right-clicking one of the offending files, I get one tab: General. My
account is a member of the Administrators Group--and only the Administrators
Group.


Can't delete from the Recovery Console, although I can see them. Can't
change permissions using xalcs.exe as it can't open the files for changes.


I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition (posted as Microsoft Windows XP
Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2) on a Toshiba Satellite P105. My AV
solution is F-Secure 2006, which shows no issues or exploits having hit my
machine (plus I work behind a firewall doing NAT). A complete online scan
also shows that I'm clean.

Files are not in use, so don't suggest killing explorer.exe as part of a
solution. Logging in with the Administrator's account runs into the same
problems: can see, can't remove.

Attempting to push permissions to all included directories from the user's
account directory (in "Documents and Settings") runs into the same problem.

I've searched and attempted most of the proposed solutions for similar
issues: none have worked so far. I'm looking for "the one" that allows me to
remove these files from my laptop. Do you have it?

Boot into a rescue system like a Bart's PE or ERD Commander (if that is
available any more) and delete the files.

Then apparently there is something wrong with the hard drive, whether
Spin Rite or Chkdsk pass it or not. I can only think of a few more
things to try:

1. Use the hard drive mftr.'s diagnostic utility to do a thorough test.
If the drive fails any physical tests, replace it.

2. Boot with a Linux Live CD that allows you to write to NTFS such as
the latest Knoppix. Once in, follow instructions for using
libntfs+fuse. Caveat: this is unsupported and there is a very real
chance you will hose the entire Windows install.

3. Live with the folders on the hard drive.

4. Clean-install Windows.
