Files and Folders disappear with File Open command

When I use File Open command in Word or Excell - the files
and folders do not appear in the window - however, when I
start Windows Explorer all the files and folders are there
in-tact.

Please assist.

You probably have "Files of type" set to something other than "Word
Documents" or "All Word Documents," or you may have the window scrolled over
to the right?
