Filepath bad, or did external hard drive go bad?

After installing Norton AntiVirus, my Maxtor 300gb external drive (I am using
XP) gives me an error msg after a long hourglass, like "H not accessable,
parameter is incorrect."

I can hear the drive spinning.

When I go to My Computer/Manage/Drive Management I have a long list of
warnings, though it says the drive is "healthy"....errors are:
"the file name, directory, or volume syntax is incorrect"
"the system cannot find the file specified"
"the device/harddisk 1/D has a bad block" (of memory I guess...and the drive
is H, not D!

Any help will be much appreciated, a lot of photos at risk here....

Ed, try uninstalling Norton AV and see if that corrects the problem. If
not you may have to do a System Restore to a point
just before you installed NAV.

I uninstalled Norton but it didn't help. I tried to reformat, but after a
long effort I got a msg, "Windows can not reformat the drive." When I go to
Start/All Programs/maxtor/utilities, it will not even bring up the basic info
like s/n etc...it is a Maxtor One Touch 300gb external drive, one yr out of
warranty. Is it likely defective and I have to trash it, but replacement? How
do I know for sure if the drive is bad?

thanks folks,
Ed T

Download the drive test utility for your particular drive from the
manufacturers web site.
