Filename

Can anyone tell me what the following file name means:

I have an excel program that I named Patrol Log. I saved
it originally on my HD. But then I copied it to a floppy.
When I did this, somehow .lnk was placed at the end,
making my filename Patrol Log.lnk

What is this type of file and how do you think it got
there?

The file size was also shrinking dramatically ? I'm pretty sure it's a shortcut to the
file, not the file itself.
